Smarter kids more likely to have drinking problems

November 3, 2008 · 1 Comment

Researchers and parents all over the world were shocked and appalled after studies showed that contrary to expectations, the smarter your kids are, the more likely they are to have drinking problems later in life.

After regaining their composure, the investigators from the University of Glasgow in Scotland called for further examination of this apparent phenomenon, “given that these findings ran counter to our expectations.”

Now I don’t know whether that’s the way independent studies roll, but surely you can’t demand a do-over just because you don’t like the outcome of something. I don’t like the way my thighs look right now, but that doesn’t mean I get to demand a do-over…! (although I would if I could!)

But back to the study…. These public health experts assessed the childhood mental ability scores of over 8,000 men and women in their 30s. This is when they found that the higher the IQ, the higher the likelihood of developing a drinking problem. The correlation existed even after factoring out socio-economic status, and was stronger in women than it was in men.

So maybe this should be a lesson for parents who can’t stop bragging about how smart their kids are (as opposed to those who just sit silently and pray that their kids don’t end up as a cross-dressing crack addict in juvie before the age of 15).

Your darling probably isn’t going to become a lawyer. But he might end up drinking like one…

Note: This study explains a lot about my binge drinking escapades when I was younger. Smart girl + too much partying = some pretty bad choices. However, this also sums up just about every kid in every college and university in the world!

Luckily I’ve ’sowed my wild oats’ and settled down to more worthwhile exploits like online Bingo. I don’t have the grey hair or wrinkles (well, not many) that most people think of when they think Bingo.  Now – a – days online is far more ‘hip’, but at least I’ve calmed down to a mild- ‘er’ type!

World’s richest dropouts – is there hope for us?

September 1, 2008 · 1 Comment

Often, when I look at rich people, I wonder if they made the money themselves, or if they inherited it.  Many of them also do or don’t have university degrees, and met people in University that set them up or helped them get to where they are.  However, it’s encouraging to see, in this day and age where everyone seems to have an obsession about employing people with a University degree, to see that some of them never got a degree at all, and still are doing amazingly well! Here are 10 of them….

1.       Bill Gates – Gates founded Microsoft – which owns MSN – in 1975 and the company went on to change the face of personal computing.

2.    Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with the help of his roommates and computer science student Andrew McCollum. Zuckerberg dropped out of his studies to run the company. And as the chief executive is worth $15 billion.

3.       Heston Blumenthal failed to gain work in the kitchens of London’s hotels and restaurants. He went on to train himself as a chef and in 1995 he opened The Fat Duck restaurant in Berkshire, which was named the world’s best restaurant in 2005 and the best restaurant in Britain in 2008.

4.    Simon Cowell left school at 16 then rose from being a post boy to a major player in the music industry, and is best-known for the international success that the Pop Idol franchise.   Cowell is also a smart businessman, making sure the winners and contestants of his show are signed to his record label. His wealth is estimated at £100 million, and he has no A-Levels, and no degree!

5.    Kate Moss was 14 when she was discovered, and became a professional model at 18, made millions by the time she was 20 and has gone on to become one of the most successful models of all time appearing on more than 300 magazine covers.  She only managed to pass one GCSE with anything higher than a D-grade.

6.    Apple, the iPod and Pixar owe either all or a significant part of their success to Steve Jobs – but the man himself dropped out of university after one term. Jobs had already worked at Hewlett-Packard in the summer, and seemed to know what he wanted to do. At 21 – after working for Atari and heading to India for a spiritual retreat – he founded Apple with Steve Wozniak and the rest, is history.

7.    But never had one. Gore Vidal, one of the most successful novelists of the 20th century, never had a degree. After army training, his first novel was published at 19 and he went on to write plays, essays and film scripts. He also entered the political arena, and became a respected political commentator and even stood as governor of California.

8.    David Geffen also worked in the  post room early  on in his career. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin, but never finished. However, after leaving University, he went on to found several record labels, signing artists as diverse as Bob Dylan and Blink-182 and producing films including Little Shop of Horrors and Beetlejuice.

9.    Ralph Lauren lasted two years at the City University of New York before dropping out and joining the army. Despite a passion for clothes he didn’t go to fashion school either – instead he worked as a salesman for American clothes retailer Brooks Brothers after leaving the armed forces. Lauren opened his own clothes shop selling ties in 1967 and in the following 40 years he has grown his fashion empire into a multi-billion pound business.

10. Not only did Delia Smith leave school without a single O-level, she also did not display a passion for cooking straight away. Delia worked as a hairdresser, shop assistant and later in a travel agency before taking up cookery. But don’t think she didn’t study -before becoming a chef, then a food writer and eventually presenter, Delia studied from cookery books in the Reading Room of the British Museum in her spare time. She has written numerous cookery books, toured doing shows, and become a virtual national hero.

So, it’s encouraging to see these strong, successful people who basically worked hard, and made money as a result. I guess I’ll never get rich from Bingo unless I play the Jackpot all the time and finally win it, but I work hard too, so that is still the avenue I pursue to wealth.

Who says hard work never paid off hey?

Mobile phone etiquette

August 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Golden Rule number 1  - Keep it quiet
If you must chat on your phone in an enclosed public space, at least keep the volume down. Especially if you’re busy telling someone what form of transport you’re on.

Golden Rule number 2  - Keep it quiet

The mobile savvy user is careful to speak in hushed tones, knowing that a mobile phone has a sensitive microphone capable of picking up a soft voice.
Golden Rule number 3  - Keep it quiet
The mobile savvy user also sets the ring tone at a low level with a tune that is soft, gentle and not annoying. Ringtones that sound like frogs, water or ‘Axel F’ by Harold Faltermeyer aren’t as amusing as you think they are.

Golden Rule number 4  - Keep it quiet  - seeing a trend yet???

The more crowded the situation, the quieter and softer the volume of voice and ring – please! We don’t like knowing your personal information, especially if its last night’s drunken exploits with some girl you picked up in the pub.
The mobile savvy user moves to vibrate in any situation like a church, a train, a workshop or a meeting where a ringing sound would prove disturbing to other people.
The mobile savvy user tries to gain as little phone attention as possible. The goal is to communicate effectively without anybody else noticing or caring. Not to brag about your notches on the beadstead, or the amounts of alcohol you can consume without barfing. Or, for that matter, the amount of barfing you actually did.
The mobile phone bore speaks loudly and employs loud, obnoxious ring tones at all the wrong times and in all the wrong places. The mobile phone bore calls attention to herself or himself- and apparently enjoys it whilst no-one else does!!
Some people seem incapable of speaking on their mobile phone in a normal tone of voice. Perhaps they are subconsciously worried that the party on the other end cannot hear them very well, so they double and triple their volume. Sometimes it seems as if they are shouting – guess what? They are shouting, and we can ALL hear you!Watch the reactions of people near the mobile phone bore when the voice or the ringer are too loud. The mobile phone bore is not a popular person – I wonder why??? Hmmmm, I see a social study coming on, paid by some university.

So, want do something useful with your old mobile once you’ve got a newer one to irritate us with?

Prise a handout from your handset – Request a Freepost envelope from either www.envirophone.co.uk or www.mazumamobile.com, post them back your old mobile and donate the cash they give you to charity.

On the other hand if you are playing Bingo at home, you can be as loud as you like with all the chat sounds – no-one will mind!! Go ahead, make all your noise with your mates at home online in Bingo chat, and please leave the rest of us in peace when travelling with you. It’s a fair compromise!

Teddy bears Picnic

August 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Children can take along their favourite teddy, doll or soft toy to enjoy storytelling, songs and poetry at the Keats House teddy bears’ picnic.

I wonder if teddys can play Bingo? Or maybe there could be an online Bingo charity drive where you donate a teddy to the online Bingo hall you play at, and they donate all the teddies collected to a special charity.

When did ignoring people become Britain’s latest pastime?

August 21, 2008 · 2 Comments

OK, so a few things irritate me. Being rude, using CAPS in emails, being disrespectful to people who have done/ lived/ seen more than you, and blatantly ignoring people.

I travel on the bus with the same 3 or 4 people every day. Same time, same bus, in some cases we walk the same road!

In each and every instance no-one says hello to each other. I’ve said hello a couple times, and got a grunt back once or twice, but it’s not a well received greeting!  Now, when did ignoring people become popular? I’m not asking personal history (although maybe that’s what they scared of), nor am I being rude, nor am I saying anything untoward that you’d not actually expect.  Just a standard ‘good morning’.  I find it strange that most people don’t do it or ignore the fact that it happened!

The other day I got on the bus and said good morning to the bus driver – as I do every morning- and he said “Good morning love” in a very cheerful voice, which shocked me! It also put me in a good mood! I was acknowledged! Jeepers! Amazing! I was so impressed!

Now, don’t get on your high horse, I know some people like to ‘wind down’ after a long day. I also know I may like to chat more than others, given my interest in online Bingo, and meeting friends online etc. However, given that I am not asking for a long conversation, is it too much to ask for a simple ‘hello’? Have good manners been replaced in Britain like curry has replaced bangers and mash?

It’s no wonder I like the online world, and the people who are sweet and supportive, jokey and fun and full of good humour. Ok, the CAPS LOCK on the CM’s does not sit well with me but I guess they have to differentiate themselves somehow, even if they have the CM_ *** before their bingo name.

So tonight after I get homing, having not talked to the people I travel with, I shall log onto my bingo games, and have a great laugh with a few people I’m likely never to meet – and that’s a paradox in itself!

The ‘thong’ answer?

August 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Sometimes it feels like life is just passing me by. The one moment you are the centre of your children’s existence, and the next they’re all grown up and ready to take on the world. I had a cruel eye opener the other day when my niece (who is only 14) asked me if I could buy her some thongs! Thongs? What need would my innocent little darling possibly have for a thong…?

After blurting out a curt “NO!” and sweating it out in silence for a while, I finally built up the courage to ask her why she wanted to wear thongs. She sweetly replied that she simply didn’t want her panty line showing… (!!!)

Well, after settling the kids and getting dinner out of the way at record speed, I couldn’t wait to logon to my favourite bingo hall and ask my trusted roomies and chat friends what to do! Online Bingo brings together people from all over the world, across many age groups, which is why it was interesting to take note of the diverse reactions and advice.

Well, after the online laughter and exclamations died down, the general consensus seemed to be that a thong was just another style of underwear that some find very comfortable, and that I’m a prude and worry wart and should seriously chill out and get a life.

Nice!

Not quite the support and understanding I expected from my trusted Online Bingo buddies! But it did give me a fresh perspective, and (lucky for my niece) a new insight.

Will I be buying her thongs in the near future?

The jury is still out…..

It may be a man’s world – but you try and tell that to these Chinese women!

August 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

According to Ananova.com, “China is to create the world’s first ‘Woman Town’ where women make all the decisions and disobedient men face punishments.”

A housewife’s wishful thinking or an actual, wondrous haven? Either way, I’ve spent most of my day dreaming about the endless possibilities of living in a “Woman Town” where the fairer sex rules, and the men just don’t feature unless there are chores to be done.

I think a little pros and cons list is in order (are there any cons??) Let’s see:

Pros
1. I always have the last say. No talking back will be tolerated. Actually, no talking will be allowed, period.
2. He gets to babysit, while I go out for a chocolate martini with the girls.
3. No more washing dishes for me, my soaps are on during that time.
4. I am never wrong. Well, that applies already, but I’ll have a slogan to back me up – carved on the town gates.
5. Kissing doesn’t always have to lead to sex. But it can if I want it to.
6. No more duvet hogging will be tolerated or complaining about my cold feet against his back.
7. All questions like “does my bum look big in this?” have to be answered with: “You are perfect, I love everything about you. Besides, I cannot stand those skinny supermodel types.”
8. Taking out the trash gets done automatically, without me having to ask repeatedly.
9. His mother isn’t allowed to stay for more than an hour tops, and staying over is strictly taboo.
Cons
1. ….
Yeah. As previously suspected there are no cons. The idealism of such a town is enough to make a grown woman weep…
On the bright side, I sometimes feel like I’ve actually found a similar, slightly feminist nirvana by playing and chatting at my favourite and best online Bingo chat room. Not that men aren’t allowed – if they can stand the heat! Lol…
Seriously, my chat buddies are great, the conversation is witty, sharp and interesting and I only have to do what I feel like doing – which in this case is chatting, playing games, spinning slots, having fun and even winning Bingo every once in a while!
Life’s good, even if I don’t live in the world’s first ‘Woman Town’ where “women make all the decisions and disobedient men face punishments…” 

Bingo helps people quit smoking ??

August 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Did you know that Bingo has helped people stop smoking? Well, in ‘the old days’ you were able to smoke in the bingo halls, and now you can’t . You have to go outside!! And the Bingo has to stop whilst people have a smoke, so according to some – it’s actually helped some people to stop smoking!

As for the rest, they probably hooked up with an online Bingo hall and carried on puffing away at home. Easier that way, and you can wear your pyjamas if you like! (I know some of those people at the halls looked like they were already wearing their pyjamas, but no-one says you have to have fashion sense to play bingo!)

Have a great weekend – and think about giving up – smoking that is, not Bingo!!!

August 14, 2008 · 1 Comment

Bingo winner Soraya Lowell is in the GBOR as the biggest winner ever.

She won the National Bingo Game in the UK, netting £1.2 million. Wow!

Unfortunately this game is currently only played offline in halls, but hopefully one day it’ll be online and we can all join in from our homes.

Jackpot Joker

August 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Have you played the new Jackpot Joker game in the on-line bingo rooms?

It’s fun, and effectively it’s a 54 – ball bingo game. That has to narrow the odds of winning hey? Added to that, it’s a Jackpot game, so there are bigger prizes to be won.

I like the idea that there are only 54 cards in  the deck, and the bigger jackpot, and so I played last night and had a bit of fun. Didn’t actually have much time, so only two games, but it doesn’t feel so much like bingo, and it seems to be quicker.

I’m gonna go play more Jackpot Joker games tonight, and a few normal bingo games, hopefully I’ll find a few 1p games ( yes, credit crunch and all that). I’ll have to have a bigger bingo splash at the end of the month after pay day, which seems a LONG way away today. Hopefully my 1p stake will generate a few bingo winnings and that will help.

If I win, I’ll let you know!
